Earth is the only place in the universe known to sustain life. The nations of the world did not have a common past, but we all are now certainly converging towards a common future with reference to environment on which depends the very survival of the human race. Environmental degradation has become a serious problem all over the world today India too, is facing adverse consequences to the gradual degradation of its natural resources, pollution, natural disasters, waste disposal, ecological imbalance ever increasing population etc. From the problems faced by the society today, it becomes clear that in the interests of compatibility with the environment we must pursue the policy of “Sustainable Development” on long term basis. However protection, improvement and conservation of our environment need immediate attention.

Environment is truly multidisciplinary and we need collective wisdom from various disciplines such as Govt., Institutions, and NGOs etc. Public participation in environment management and conservation is urgently required .Mass awareness is important from point of view of achieving the objective relatively faster. Non – governmental organizations can play crucial role in maintaining quality of human life by way of involving people in environmental movement, increasing awareness and understanding environmental conservation programmes.
